How GB businesses can get paid to support the grid – without disruption

12 August 2025

The UK’s journey towards a greener, more secure energy system is accelerating, and businesses are uniquely positioned to benefit. Flexitricity’s new platform, FlexGO, enables GB businesses to earn revenue by supporting the electricity grid, without compromising their core operations.

Over the past three decades, Britain has dramatically reduced the carbon intensity of its grid, replacing coal with gas and scaling up wind and solar. But renewable energy is, by nature, intermittent — the wind doesn’t always blow when demand is highest. As the grid has become cleaner and more decentralised, balancing electricity supply and demand in real time has become more challenging.

This is where flexibility comes in. Flexibility is simply changing when or how electricity is used to align with times when the grid needs help, this could be by using less when demand is high, or using more when there’s surplus renewable generation. The National Energy System Operator and Distribution System Operators pay assets to help balance the system, manage grid constraints and respond to unexpected grid events – there’s the opportunity for businesses to help.

Many businesses already have assets that can be flexible: cold stores, heat pumps, battery storage, water pumps, or really any process that can be paused briefly or shifted without impact to the business. FlexGO connects to customers’ equipment via Application Programming Interface (API), a simple plug-in devices, or an outstation solution, depending on the complexity and requirements of the site. Our system takes care of everything: from energy market decisions to dispatching flexible loads and ensuring accurate metering and settlement. All the complexity stays behind the scenes, so customers can focus on their core business.

Very importantly, these assets are rarely available for energy flexibility 24/7, there are often daily, weekly or seasonal considerations which influence when equipment can be operated flexibly. FlexGO ensures businesses can remain in control with the ability to opt out when they know they’re not going to be available, and also provides override options for unexpected situations.

Businesses of various sizes and sectors are already earning from their flexibility - from data centres to food growers, from distilleries to water utilities. By participating, they’re not just earning revenue: they’re also helping the grid integrate more renewables, cutting carbon emissions, and reducing overall energy costs for everyone.

The demand for energy flexibility is accelerating. Government and regulators have made it clear: flexibility is central to Britain’s net zero strategy. FlexGO empowers businesses to take part — earn revenue, support the grid, and cut carbon — all without disrupting day-to-day operations. Don’t wait. Get involved, get rewarded, and lead the energy transition. Find out how your business can participate at FlexGO.Energy
