We're live in the Balancing Mechanism

We're live in the Balancing Mechanism

We’re delighted to announce that Flexitricity is now live in the Balancing Mechanism - the most important market in flexible energy. We got off to a great start and have received two Bid Offer Acceptances (BOAs) to date! The new service will officially be launched on 31st October by Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands.

The Balancing Act: Weighing up the opportunities in the Balancing Mechanism

The Balancing Act: Weighing up the opportunities in the Balancing Mechanism

Is the Balancing Mechanism (BM) the next big thing in flexible energy? We believe it is – for the foreseeable future. The most lucrative options shift as the energy landscape changes which means you need to be able to stay ahead of the curve to maximise your revenue. This applies to aggregators like Flexitricity as much as it does to energy users, generators and developers. As Mr Darwin so aptly put it: “It is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.”

Data-driven thinking in demand response

Data-driven thinking in demand response

The legacy grids are being renovated to smart grids using various flavours of sensing, communication, control and internet technologies. Demand response (DR) is one of the most successfully implemented mechanisms on the smart grid platform as it exists today. This has enabled the active participation of consumers in providing flexibility through grid balancing services (once the preserve of centralised generators) – thereby reducing costs and carbon.

Success will be defined by a thousand small things

“We’re going to shake up how the National Grid is balanced”. That was the cry from Flexitricity that piqued the attention of the industry when the company announced that it was to become an energy supplier. It’s a watershed moment, and who wouldn’t want to be part of that!

How will the Medium Combustion Plant Directive affect Capacity Market participants?

How will the Medium Combustion Plant Directive affect Capacity Market participants?

The Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) seeks to reduce air pollution by controlling emissions from medium combustion plants (MCPs), which include both generators (with a rated thermal input between 0 – 50 MW) and boilers (with a rated thermal input between 1 - 50 MW).

Part 1: How did it come to this?

OK, I admit it.  Nearly fourteen years ago, when Flexitricity was born in my spare bedroom, I didn’t think I was setting up an electricity and gas supply business.  I’ve been resisting the idea for most of the company’s history.
