Through Low Carbon London (LCL) - Flexitricity will be deploying established technologies into a new initiative, delivering real revenues to you and the London economy while reducing carbon at a national level.

Low Carbon London is a "smart city" initiative that will use London to demonstrate how cities can implement smarter electricity networks to manage the demands of a low carbon economy - the programme encompasses everything from utilising spare generating capacity and turning down consumption at times of high usage, through to understanding how electric vehicles and wind power will be embraced in the future.

Who is behind Low Carbon London?

LCL is a collaboration between UK Power Networks (UKPN) and commercial partners including us – Flexitricity. UKPN is the company that distributes electricity across London, the East of England and the South East of England – the company owns and operates the network of cables and power lines that deliver electricity to London businesses.

Flexitricity created and now operates the first, largest and most advanced smart grid system in the UK – bringing revenue to UK businesses, increasing asset reliability, reducing national CO2 emissions and helping to secure energy supplies for a low carbon economy.

Together we are committed to developing a smarter electricity network that embraces the interests of London – we will be financially rewarding industrial and commercial customers for a more flexible and ‘greener’ approach to their electricity demand.

A learning journey

Low Carbon London is a pioneering programme funded by Ofgem's Low Carbon Networks Fund.  Its aim is to use London as a test bed to develop a smarter electricity network that can manage the demands of a low carbon economy and deliver reliable, affordable low carbon electricity to businesses, residents and communities.

It's a vital task considering that the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan is calling for a 34% cut in carbon emissions on 1990 levels by 2020.  That's a real challenge and a goal that will only be achieved if the learning process begins now.

London has a unique opportunity to be at the heart of this drive towards a low carbon economy. Currently it has the highest levels of carbon emissions in the UK, one of the most utilised electricity networks in the country and a very tough carbon reduction target of 60% on 1990 levels by 2025 (Mayor of London’s Climate Change Mitigation and Energy Strategy).

To cut its carbon emissions, London is calling for a big increase in distributed and micro-generation, electric vehicles, combined cooling, heating and power systems, and heat pumps. Low Carbon London is about learning how to accommodate these new demands on the electricity network, while helping customers to make the best use of national low carbon electricity production.

London’s approach to carbon reduction is likely to be mirrored across the UK – so the knowledge gained in London will help electricity networks across the country to prepare for a low carbon future.
